You need to distribute to remove the parentheses:
1/2(6x+10)-(x+8)
--> 3x+5-x-81/2(6x+10)-(x+8)
combine like terms
3x+5
-x-8
____
2x+13
1/2(6x+10)-(x+8) is 2x+13 simplified

Hope this helps.
