Structuralism sought to break down mental processes into their most basic components. The primary method involved was introspection.

Associationism examines how events or ideas can become associated with one another in the mind. It also employed introspection, but rather than trying to discover the most basic components of mental processes, associationism sought to examine the relationships or links which aid our cognitive processes.
